It has been used by humankind for thousands of years for both health and culinary purposes. Spices had played a crucial role in shaping the course of world history. India has a vast History of spices. In Ayurvedic medicine, spices such as cloves and cardamom were wrapped in betel-nut leaves. And were chewed after meals to increase the flow of saliva and aid digestion.

From ages, spices have been a crucial component of India’s external trade with foreign countries unlike Sumeria, Arabia, Mesopotamia, China, Egypt and, along with textiles and perfumes.

In ancient times, Caravans of camels moved regularly from Calicut, Goa and the Orient. They transported these spices to distant destinations such as Alexandria, Carthage, and Rome.

The Bible also mentions that in 1000 BC, Queen Sheba visited King Solomon in Jerusalem. And offered him “120 measures of gold, many spices, and precious stones.Source

Although today, Indian spices are readily available everywhere. But there was a time when people risked their lives to gain access to Indian spices. From the Indian perspective, it brought in traders and invaders alike – century after century.

Essential Spices for Indian Cooking

Indians foods are worldwide popular only because of the intermixing of a variety of spices which not only add on color and the flavor but also enhances the taste and depth of the recipes. The authentic taste of many foods are mainly because of some particular spices, without which the recipe is tasteless. Unlike in a Punjabi dish, popularly known as kadhi, the authentic taste is mainly because of the kadhi leaves.
