We have come a long way from finding ways or directions basis position of Sun, Moon, and stars. We have evolved to function better, including finding ways to our destinations. Irrespective of familiarity with the place, we instinctively observe the wayfinding signage design while moving around the place. These signage are especially helpful when we are in an unfamiliar place, saving us a lot of energy and time during our journey. The navigation signage also represents that a place has highly developed infrastructure – more the number of signage more developed the infrastructure is. Think about it, the route that you frequently take to travel to the office or relatives’ or friends’ home may have changed a lot in a matter of a few years in terms of bridge construction, multiple lanes, etc with the installation of signage boards as well.

How to make an effective signboard?

A good wayfinding signage board uses the least amount of information to guide people from point X to Y. The board must have high contrast signs for good readability and legibility of the signage. Therefore, most sign boards are either in dark shades like black or blue with text written in white or vice-versa. For typography, sans font types in bold are suitable. The text should be in the native language and preferably in English.

The art of placing a signboard

The text or symbol on the navigation signboard must make it easier for the reader to find what or who they are looking for. Therefore, well-placed signage design and pictographs enhance the journey or travel experience. The board must be placed in an area with good lighting and should have good readability from a distance. It should not mix with its surrounding.

1.) DIRECTIONAL SIGNS to guide people in finding ways.

2.) CONFORMATIONAL SIGNS to make people aware that they are heading towards the right path or have reached their destination finally.

3.) INFORMATIONAL SIGNS to share important information or warn about something.

4.) REGULATORY SIGNS such as ‘No Smoking’, ‘No Parking’, and others.
