E. Jerome McCarthy in 1960s spoke about “4 P’s of marketing” that ensure how well a brand’s product will be sold. These 4 P’s (Product, Price, Promotion, and Place) are the basics of performing any kind of marketing activities. However, with the quintessential creative abilities of marketers, we have today gone beyond and added another P for Packaging. Yes, you read that right, 5th P (Packaging) can also be a determinable factor when it comes to selling a product or even a service! Think about it, how many times you or your friends/familiars have compared the same products but ended up buying a product with better packaging? We are sure it is more than once because from consumers’ perspective better packaging = better product.

Effective packaging works better than any promotion

Advertisement, hoarding boards and other kinds of promotions are great ways to draw the attention of the potential buyers, but the real competition is when the same product is placed with competing products on the same shelf. Also, these days’ advertisers try to create a story on some social cause or issue and place the product in the story. Product packaging design is something tangible and is more personal – we hold it, interact with it, carry it and also share it (Coke created cans with the special label of ‘Dad’, ‘Sister’, etc that were widely bought to celebrate bonds). Packaging design is also something that we live with every day! A product bought is stored at home within its original packaging for very long. An innovative and creative package finds a special place and may outlive the lifespan of actual product packed in it.

Life can get awfully monotonous due to the routine that most people follow – Jogging, work, eating similar kind of food, shopping, etc. Rewind and recall how your shopping experience is at times refreshed by some innovative packaging by a brand. Even the slight change in the packaging of the product that we buy frequently makes us curious.
